ABSTRACT
This study examined the effects of coal mining
on the livelihood system of an agrarian community, Ngwo, Udi Local Government
Area of Enugu State. Fifty farmers were selected purposively in Okwojo and
another fifty other farmers were randomly selected from five non-coal mining
communities (ten farmers from each community), for comparism. Data were
generated through the use of structured questionnaire. Descriptive and
regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Results show that 62% of the
respondents are within their active years of farming and the mean age of the
farmers was about 51 years while 73% of the respondents were educated. In the
coal mining area more than half of the respondents (56.42%) use either organic
or inorganic fertilizer in farming or 74.0% of the farmers treat their stream
water before usage because of the contamination due to coal mining. Results of
the regression analysis show that there is significant relationship between
labour cost, input cost, land ownership, farm size and revenue in the coal
mining area. While input cost, farm size, educational level and revenue are
significantly related in non-coal mining areas. Chow's test results show that
there is significant difference between coal mining and non-coal mining areas
with F* greater than F-tabulated i.e. 30.445 > 2.66 for differences in the
estimations and 183.87 > 6.85 for 1, differences in the intercepts.
Therefore, policies should be directed towards proper waste management given
that major effect of coal mining is caused by improper waste disposal from the
mine.
