Abstract
The aim
ofthis study was to determine the effect size ofpreviousfindings on the effect
of concept mapping on students’ academic achievement in Chemistry. Meta -
analytic research which adopted ex-post facto type of survey research design
was usedfor the study. Purposive sampling technique was used to draw 30 studies
on effect of concept mapping on students’ achievement in chemistry. The data
were collected using coding instrument which was designedfor this study. The
reliability ofthe instrument wasfound to be 0.72 using inter-rater agreement
reliability. Percentage, statistical transformations and effect sizes were used
to analyze the datafor the research questions while winner combined test was
used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level ofsignificance. The findings ofthe
study showed among others that mean effect sizesfor the 30 studies examined
effect ofconcept mapping on students’ achievement in Chemistry recorded a
positive and large effect size(0.646). The mean effect ofconcept mapping on
students’ achievement is significant at 0.05 levels. Based on the findings, it
was recommended among others that government through the Ministry of Education
and Professional bodies like Science Teachers Association of Nigerian and
Association of Educational Researchers and Evaluators of Nigerian should
provide in-service training, workshops, seminars and conferencesfor Chemistry
teachers on the teaching of Chemistry using concept mapping and as well as the
principles and processes ofimplementing the strategy in the classroom
