Effect Of Microcredit On Broiler Production In Umuahia North Local Government Area Of Abia
ABSTRACT
This study examined the effect of
microcredit on broiler production in Umuahia North Government area of Abia
State. A total of 50 farmers were randomly selected for the study. Data used
for this study were generated using a well structured questionnaire. In
analyzing data, descriptive statistical tools and regression analysis were
adopted. Results obtained on socio-economic characteristics of respondents
showed that majority of farmers were males, ranging between 31 — 40 years with
most households married with household size of 6 being the most observed.
Mostly experienced farmers with stock size of 101 — 200 broilers. Sources of
credit include Agricultural loan scheme, owned savings, bank loans and Isusu.
Regression estimates shows that determinants of micro credit output include
amount of loan received, capital, cost of medication, feeding and labour cost. Obvious
challenges include high interest rate, long distance from credit sources, lack
of technical knowhow, and illiteracy were the major setbacks in obtaining
microcredit. It is suggested that reforms be made to reducing interest rate for
improved output.
