ABSTRACT
The effect
of harrowing depth and operational speed on the performance of some tine harrow
in Abia state were examined. Results revealed that the tine harrow had maximum
field efficiency of 98.25% at a working speed of 10 km h-1 in clay-loam soil.
The harrow had maximum fuel consumption of 7.0 litrs at operational speed of 5
km h-1, at a working speed of 8 km h-1, it recorded maximum theoretical field
capacity of 0.045%, and 0.046% respectively. Results further indicated that On
the other hand, the harrow recorded its maximum effective field capacity of
0.067 and 0.174% in clay-loam soil, it had minimum field efficiency of 95.60%
at speed of 7 km h-1 and it achieved a minimum fuel consumption of 6.5 under
working speed of 6 km h-1. The harrow attained maximum field efficiency at
higher operational speeds (8-9 km h-1) as compared to other implement that
achieved their maximum field efficiencies at lower operational speeds (5 - 7 km
h-1). The lower operational speed ofthe harrow was attributed to the higher
tractive and draft force required in its operation, to initially break up and
turn over the compacted soil which is associated with slow operational speed
than other tillage implements.
