ABSTRACT

Cowpea (Kano white variety) seeds were stored at different moisture levels in different packaging materials for a period of 12 weeks. Plastic containers, lines jute bag and unlined jute bag were used as the packaging materials. The moisture levels were 1O%,12%,15%and20%.The samples were stored at room temperature and the following parameters were monitored on a bi-weekly basis: seeds viability, moisture content, foam capacity and stability. Preliminary experiment in petri dishes using cowpea seeds and different concentrations of Piper guineense, Capsicum annum and a combination of the plant products showed that P. guineense had an ovicidal effect on Cailosobruchus maculates .A combination of extract from the plants did not have any synergistic effect on deposition by C. maculates. Storage studies showed that foam capacity and stability, and viability of cowpea seed significantly (P<0.05) decreased over the storage period. These properties also decreased with increased moisture level in cowpea seeds. Storage of cowpea seeds at 10% moisture level in plastic container gave the best retention of seed characteristics. Infestation significantly (P<0.05) reduced globulin 1 (Gi) fraction of cowpea protein.
