ABSTRACT
Regardless
of the common use, statistical significance test procedures and P-values have
been misinterpreted by authors and misunderstood by students in virtually
every’ discipline. In light of this need, the researchers delves into the
development and validation ofan instrument for assessing students’ correct
conceptions and misconceptions ofp-values and statistical significance to
improve the quality ofresearch in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The study
adopted instrumentation design. It was carried out in University of Uyo, Akwa
Ibom State College ofEducation andAkwa Ibom State Polytechnic in Akwa Ibom
State. The population ofthe study comprised of 7, 520 research students in the
three tertiary institutions in Akwa Ibom State. Purposive sampling was used to
select sample size of 120 students usedfor the study. To guide the study, four
research questions were posed and ; were formulated and tested at 0.05 level
ofsignificance. The instrument for data the statistical significance and
reasoning about p-value rating scale SSAPRS. The four hypotheses collection was
1 , internal consistency reliability coefficient ofthe rating scale revealed
0.85 reliability. Datafrom the research subjects were analyzed using factor
analysis, Cronbach's alpha, mean and standard deviation, analysis ofvariance
(ANOVA), post hoc test and t-teststatistic. It wasfound out that there was
significant difference in the mean scores of the three ability groups (High,
average and low competent). Post hoc revealed that there was a significant
difference in the mean scores ofthe high ability and average ability. It was
therefore recommended that statistical literacy should be stressed in the
introductory courses and that literacy may be necessary to demonstrate
statistical reasoning or thinking about inference. In addition to stressing
statistical literacy, statistics educators might target instruction and
assessment to address prevalent inferential misconceptions for introductory
research students
