ABSTRACT
Solar distiller is a device which allows using
the heat ofthe sun to evaporate water clean or dirty and condense fresh water
for drinking and other industrial use. This work presents the analysis of a
solar water distillation system. There is important need for good drinking
water in the world today due to harmful [effects of water borne diseases.
Fortunately, solar distillation is very rewarding in terms of operating and
maintenance cost. Solar distiller is simple in construction, cheap and easy to
use but has a drawback of low productivity. The water used in this work is I
collected from the borehole in Michael Okpara university of agriculture of
Umudike and experiment was performed at the department experimental field in
Michael Okpara university of agriculture Umudike. The fluid and surface
temperature were measured and: recorded with a Thermocouple at regular interval
of three hours. It was concluded that the performance of the developed solar
water [distiller was affected by the temperature and solar intensity and
relative humidity ofthe area it was tested. The highest irradiance level of
905.4 W/m2' was observed on day one, the highest ambient temperature of 38 °C
was also observed on day two. The highest rise inlet temperature was observed on
day one with a temperature rise of 45.5 °C between two noon. It is noteworthy
ithat day two had the lowest irradiance levels. The relative humidity was
highest at 69.4% and was recorded at day three. This shows that there were
variations in the solar radiation, relative humidity and Temperature readings.
