Determination Of Selected Engineering Properties Of Velvet Tamarind {Dialium Guineense} Necessary For Shelling:- Nwankwo Faith A
ABSTRACT
The
investigation on selected engineering properties of velvet tamarind necessary
for shelling was carried out in the laboratory of Agricultural and
Bio-resources Engineering department in Michael Okpara University of
Agriculture Umudike. The relevance of the nutritive value ofthis fruit has
called for the development of processing machine. At 19% db moisture content,
the mean of the following geometric properties were determined, the length,
width, thickness, weight, GMD, AMD, specific surface area, surface area, square
mean are 1.19mm, 1.14 mm, 0.54mm, 0.63g, 6.04mm, 0.96mm, 0.27mm2, 0.59 mm2,
0.93mm2 respectively. Gravimetric properties such as the volume, true density,
bulk density and porosity at the same moisture content was gotten asl.9cm3,
45.1g/cm3, 58.3g/cm3and 77.3 respectively. For the frictional properties,
carried out on four different surfaces (wood, Plywood Mild steel metal sheet
and Glass), the highest angle of repose gotten was on wood which was 43° and
the lowest was glass at 30°. In the aerodynamic properties, the terminal
velocity ranged from 7.9 m/s and the drag coefficient calculated ranged from
1.18x 106 to 9.4*106
