ABSTRACT
Despite the fact transformer is a
highly efficient machine with very small losses, thus the input power is almost
equal to the output power, the reason being that it has no moving parts and
therefore no friction or winding losses. The transformer trainer is a very
valuable piece of equipment in the electrical power machine laboratory in the
Electrical engineering Department in the tertiary institutions to reach and
demonstrate the principle of operation and applications of the single phase
transformer. It is a universal and versatile equipment. The trainer is not
constructed to demonstrate on any particular transformer with a particular
winding style or particular core arrangement. Rather, any single phase
transformer can be demonstrated or tested on it provided that the test load
current and voltage values do not exceed the current and voltage ratings of the
instruments to avoid damages. You can test and demonstrate any single phase
transformer up to .but not exceeding 4KVA. Students can easily and freely test
their own transformer projects and assess their performance. Also students can
test two or more transformers of the same rating but different winding and core
arrangement to learn the effect such construction features may have on the
performance and efficiency of the transformer. Some of the test and experiments
that can be conducted on the transformer trainer include polarity test, test on
no-load and loaded conditions, open circuit and short circuits tests.
Experiments on voltage regulations and efficiency of the single phase
transformer, and much can also be carried out.
