Consumption Patterns And Preference Switching Among Consumers From Foreign To Local Rice In Abia State
ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to analysis the consumption
patterns and preference switching among consumers from foreign rice to local
rice in Abia State, Nigeria. Three local government areas were purposively
selected for the study. These are Umuahia North, Ikwuano and lsukwuato. After
this forty respondents were selected from each of them, giving a total of 120
respondents. Thereafter, questionnaires were administered to them. This
questionnaire acted as the primary source of data while materials like journal,
books, buttletins, etc acted as a source of secondary data. 100 respondents
returned their questionnaires and were therefore used for the analysis. Descriptive
statistics, binary logit, multiple regression, and paired t-statistic were used
for the analysis. The result showed that age, price, income and household size
were statistically significant, thus been the major determinates of rice
consumption. The result also showed that education, price and income were the
major reasons for the switch from foreign to local rice. The study recommended
among other things that farmers should be encouraged and provided with
incentive to produce more of local rice.
