ABSTRACT

 Soil compaction refers to the physical degradation of the soil resulting in densitication and distortion of soil where biological activity ,porosity and permeability arc reduced. strength is increased and soil structure is partly destroyed .The purpose o.f this project is to get the compaction properties of sandy( sample A) and loamy(sample B) soil in umueze nkwerre .imo statc which can be used to estimate the rate of settlement of a structure due to small land mass and limited land space.the soil samples were tested for moisture content .particle size distribution test. Atterherg limits .compaction test and California hearing ratio. sample A was found to have a percentage passing sieve of 200 micron of 2.10%.with 0% of atterberg limits, optimum moisture content value of 14.1 5% and maximum dry density of I .65mg/m and California bearing ratio value of 69.1% while sample B have a percentage passing sieve 200 micron of 0.60%.liquid limit of 41%. plastic limit of 19.5% and plasticity index of 21.5%.optimum moisture content value of 13.61%. maximum dry density of 1.89mg/rn3and californi bearing ratio value of 21 .1%. Sample A was found to he good for sub-grade. subbase and base course sections for construction purposes while sample B is not advisable for construction purposes but for agricultural purposes.
