ABSTRACT

The main aim of this study is to find out the community involvement in funding and administration for effective management of secondary education in Umuahia Education zone. Four research questions and three null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A total of eleven (11) secondary schools out of the thirty-one (31) secondary schools in Umuahia zone were used. Eleven principals from the eleven sample schools were used. Ten parents from each sample school were used which add up to one hundred and ten parents. All the eleven principals and the one hundred and ten parents which amounted 1 21 respondent in total responded to items in the questionnaire covering the research questions and hypotheses. The data collected were analyzed using the statistical weighted mean score for the research questions while the t-test was used for testing the hypotheses. The findings show that: Principal and parents held that community sometimes is involved in funding but rarely in administration of schools. Principals and parents see community involvement as something beneficial to school and community. One of the findings is that parents help the school when they are aware of the school problems. Since the community renders some financial and administrative assistance which is beneficial to school and community, the principal should encourage community involvement by creating a healthy and conducive atmosphere between the school and the community. Principals should, therefore, make the successes and problems of the school known to the community through P.T.A meetings, price giving day, inter-house sports, founder's day and other festivals.
