ABSTRACT
The study examined the influence of school environmental factors on students’ interest and academic achievement in chemistry in Akwa Ibom State. Six research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The survey research design was adopted for the study and the population of the study consisted of all the SSII students in 2019/2020 academic session in 14 public secondary schools in Uyo Municipality of Akwa Ibom State. A sample size of 630 senior secondary two (SS2) chemistry students were selected for the study using a simple random sampling technique. A researcher developed instrument titled school environmental factors on chemistry students’ academic achievement questionnaire (SEFCSAAQ) was used for data collection in the study. The instrument was validated By Two experts, in the Department of Science Education, College of Education, Michael Okpara University Umudike, Abia State. The Cronbach Alpha reliability index of school environmental factors on students’ interest and academic achievement questionnaire was 0.88. Mean and standard deviation were used in answering research questions and independent t-test was used in testing the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The following findings were made: there was no significant difference between the responses of students from urban schools and those from rural schools on the extent of influence of school location on their academic achievement in chemistry and also there was no significant difference between the responses of students from rural schools and those from urban schools on the extent of influence of school location on their interest in chemistry. The researcher recommended, among others that: the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Education and State Secondary Education Board should henceforth ensure that secondary schools are provided with standard laboratory/instructional materials to enhance students understanding of the concept of chemistry taught.
