ABSTRACT
Samples of
honey collected from the Michael Okpara University Honey farm was analysed for
some of its chemical constituents using GCMS and the results obtained indicated
the presence of diethylene glycol (49.63%), 3- methyoxy - 1, 2 - propanediol
(20.97%) and 1 - deoxy - d - arabitol (29.40%). These compounds were found to
be rich in hetero atoms and possess suitable functional groups, that meet the
conditions needed to be met by a good corrosion inhibitor. Consequently, its
corrosion inhibition potential was investigated using weight loss method. Honey
was found to be a good adsorption inhibitor for the corrosion of zinc in
solution of HC1. The adsorption of the inhibitor supported the mechanism of
physical adsorption (because the inhibition efficiency decreases with increase
in temperature, values of activation energy and free energy of adsorption were
within the range expected for the mechanism of physiosorption) and was best
described by Langmuir, Temkin and El Awardy et al. adsorption model. Calculated
values of the heat of adsorption indicated that the adsorption of honey on the
surface of zinc is thermodynamically spontaneous.
