Availability And Use Of Laboratory Facilities For Effective Teaching Of Physics In Senior Secondary Schools In Osisioma L.G.A In Abia State
ABSTRACT
This study tends to determine the availability and
utilization of laboratory materials in physics teaching and learning in
Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area of Abia State. This study is a descriptive
survey research design. Four research questions and one hypothesis guided the
study. Physics teachers from the nine (9) state owned secondary schools in
Osisiorna Ngwa Local Government Area constituted the sample. Data were
collected with the help of a questionnaire structured along four points scales
of very often (4), often (3), seldomly (2) and not at all (1). Data were
analyzed using descriptive statistics, mean, standard- deviation and
percentages while the inferential statistics were used to test the hypothesis
with the help of T-test statistics. The instrument used were Physics Laboratory
Equipment Checklist (PLEC). Two Senior Lecturers from the Department of Science
Education in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike validated the
instruments after which they were pilot tested using Physics teachers and
laboratory assistants who were not part of the sample of the study. The null
hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance using t-test. 83.488% of
physics teachers and laboratory assistants indicated the availability of Physics
Laboratory Equipment (PLE) in schools. Recommendations were made to the
government to make the Physics Laboratory Equipment (PLE) available in
secondary schools for teachers and students.
