ABSTRACT

 This Study was carried out on the Assessment of Long Term Water Storage in Two Different Household Containers with the specific objectives of assessing the effect of long storage time on the bacterial load ofthe water samples and assessing the effect of different storage containers on the quality of water samples in Ikwuano LGA of Abia State. The water samples that was used for the analysis was collected from a pre-analyzed borehole and was stored for three different storage time namely two (2) week, four (4) weeks and six (8) weeks in two different makes of container. The sampling was done between 8.00am and 11.00 am in the morning, using 1 liter sterilized sampling cans according to the rules and ethics of the international standard organization (ISO). The most probable number (MPN) method was used in determining the coliform counts of the water samples and the most probable numbertube fermentation techniques was performed in three o stages: Presumptive test, confirmative test and completed test. The results of the analysis show that the stored water samples did not show physical signs of pollution up to the 8 weeks ofstudy except for the turbidity. But there w'ere significant changes in the chemical parameters from the two weeks, four weeks and the eighth week storage time and recommended that there is need for constant water quality monitoring and that Long term of storage ofwater should be discouraged to avoid contamination.
