Assessment of food habits and nutritional status of pregnant women in the rural areas of Ukwa West Local Government Area.:- Nwagbaoso, Mercy .C
ABSTRACT
The study was
designed to assess the nutritional status and food habits of the pregnant women
in the rural areas of Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State. A
validated questionnaire was used to get information on the Nutritional Status,
Food Habits and Nutritional Knowledge of the Pregnant Women in two Communities
(Umunteke and Umuadienwe) in Ukwa West L.G.A of Abia State. A total number of
367 pregnant women participated in the study. Data collected from the study was
subjected to statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) Versionl7, and
single descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage were used to
analyze the data collected. The results of the different variables collected
revealed that most ofthe women (38.7%) were within the age of 19-24 years. The
nutritional and health knowledge of the pregnant women were shown. The result
further reveals the feeding pattern of the pregnant women, (35.7%) feed twice a
day, (28.6%) feed 3 times a day and none of them feed more than four times a
day. The result showed that Nutrition Education is still necessary especially
for those in Umunteke and Umuadienwe, the two Communities in Ukwa West L.G.A of
Abia State. The result shows that nutrition education is necessary.
