ABSTRACT

This study. Assessment of borehole water quality in Olokoro community, Abia state was carried out. The quality ofwater used for domestic purposes from twenty boreholes at Olokoro community in Umuahia-South Local Government Area ofAbia State. (Twenty boreholes) was analyzed and assessed for a period of three months (August, September and October) using standard methods ofsampling and laboratory analysis given by. Parameters tested include Ph dissolved oxygen (DO), five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), nitrate ion (NO3), conductivity, hardness, temperature total dissolved solids (TDS) and turbidity. Temperature shows a range al 6.650±5.896, pH shows a ranges at 6.304:1:6.242, Turbidity shows a range at6.410i6.136, electrical conductivity shows a range at 6.432±6.114, total dissolved solid shows a range at 7.750±4.796, dissolved oxygen shows a range at 8.013±4.533, biochemical dissolved oxygen shows a range at 8.097±4.449, nitrate shows a range at 6.709±5.837 and hardness shows a range at 6.365±6.181 all in frequency. All results showed that there are significant differences between the different wards. However, a one-way ANOVA conducted reveals significant difference (p < 0.05) between the different sites and physicochemical parameters been analysed. From the range ofthe results, it all fall between WHO recommended range, which shows that the water is safe for drinking and other uses. Thus, the study has helped to allay people’s fear that the water here is sub-standard for drinking and domestic purposes It is therefore recommended that government should be more effective in controlling the point source of pollution in the study area.
