ABSTRACT

According to Obioha (1992), the Poultry industry in Nigeria has undergone a signification transformation since: the early fifties, from a backyard, peasant and primitive household-oriented husbandry of indescript breeds of semi-wiid chickens, to cash-oriented, modern, medium-and large-scale poultry which colour countryside and urban centres today. Howe .er, many enter- preneurs engaged in Poui try, especially Broilcc Production in Nigeria, in the recent years have encountered failures in the business due to high cost of feeds, lack of rcevant technical knowledge and poor management. Broiler Production is a very lucrative enterprise, if the right types of feed arc available at moderate prices and the best management practices are applied. Since he prices of feed and other inputs in the production of Broilers are predetermined variables which are not under the control of the farmerhe has to make management decisions that: will enable him meet his objectives within the existing price structure. More specifically, the farmer would have to combine his resources to achieve the optimum market weight in the shortest time possible (about eight weeks). One reason for high cost of producing Broiler 'to market weight is the withdrawal of subsidies by Government on grains and other inputs, making the cost of production of feed to rise. According to Ukachukwu (1997), one solution to the problem of high cost of feed might involve use of alternative feedstuffs to' achieve least— cost ration, specially for rnori'ogastric animals. However, these alternative feed stuffs have often proved to be ineffective in most casess compered t the qrains (Eciceren et 1990).
