ABSTRACT
Linear programming (LP) technique is relevant in optimization of resource allocation and
achieving efficiency in production planning particularly in achieving increased agricultural
productivity. In this study a Linear programming technique is applied to determine the optimum
land allocation to five crops in three different farms of Abia liberation farms in Abia state in
order to maximize profit using agriculture data, with respect to various factors (capital allocation
to labour, fertilizer, pesticides, seeds/tuber purchase, as well as usable hectares of land), for the
2013 farming season. The proposed LP model was solved by two phase simplex algorithm.
Results indicated that resources were not optimally allocated and after optimization, of which out
of the fifteen production enterprises, made up of five crops (cassava,yam, plantain, sweet
potatoes and maize)grown in three different farms (Umuahia,Aba and Ohafia) five were not
recommended by the model. The resultfurther indicated that gross margins could be increased as
it prescribed an optimal profit of N6,648,766.28K as against N3,843,000.00K (an increase of
73.01%). This study recommends that policies of government that would help farmers at all
levels to get access to enough fund in order to secure a steady labour supply should be enacted as
this will help improve agricultural productivity for agriculture to key in to its expectations as the
proxy redeemer of the nation's economy.
