Analysis Of Consumers Preference For Meat Types In Umuahia North Local Government Area Of Abia State

ABSTRACT

Meat is a concentrated source of high quality proteins and amino acids required for the growth, maintenance and repair of all body tissues. This paper examine the meat consumption pattern and consumer preference in Umuahia North metropolis of Abia State. So respondents were selected by multistage sampling technique and data were collected using structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using ordered probit. Analysis of the result reveal that 36% of the respondents prefer beef; Goat meat 10%, pork meat 14%; Poultry meat 24% and fish 16%. The study revealed that about 53.27% of meat expenditure was incurred on beef, this was followed by poultry expenditure (24.0), fish (16%), Pork meat (14%) and Goat meat (10%). The result clearly show that expenditure on beef accounted for more than half of the total expenditure on meat in the study area. It is also evident that the major reasons for household eat preference are the meat's good taste (81.7%), affordability (70%) and nutritional value (60.8%). Others reasons include the eats availability as well as freshness, while the major determinants of meat preference in the area are monthly income, sex of the household head, household size and educational level of household head and marital status of household head.
