ABSTRACT

Adult education is an integral part of the nation building and development process. It is intimately associated with human development and national growth. In order to eradicate illiteracy, education for adults who did not have the opportunity of going to school when they were younger was designed. Hence, adult education is the type of learning which begins when one is already an adult and this is different from formal education which begins few months after birth. UNESCO (1976) stipulates that adult education is the process by which men and women seek the process to improve themselves, society by increasing their skills and knowledge and sensitiveness. As Pierik (2003) observed, a good number of working age population cannot complete basic tasks necessary for many jobs in the market today and this trend has left quite a good number of people behind as many adults lack the needed skills that would enable them to participate fully in the nation building. Accordingly, the importance attached to education has led the Nigerian Federal Government to adopt education as an instrument per excellence for affecting national change as enshrined in its policy document, National Policy on Education.
