ABSTRACT
Mortality statistics are bye products of the
legal process of death registration. When one talks about infant mortality one
is talking about death ofinfant that are between the ages zero and one (0-1).
Thus the study was to develop a stationary time series model suitable for
infant mortality data at Federal Medical Centre Umuahia. The data for this work
were secondary data collected from the Medical Record Department of Federal
Medical Centre umuahia. and covers the period January 2006 to December 2011.
Box and Jenkins method oftime series was employed as a toolfor the analysis.
The trend was estimated which indicates an upward long term movement ofinfant
mortality in the hospital. Plots of autocorrelation function and partial
autocorrelation function ofthe differenced data were used to identify a
stationary model for the data. By the use of statistical software called
MINITAB, an Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model was fitted
and diagnostic checking was done using Q statistics to check the adequacy of
the fitted model. Forecast values were also made for the period of 24 months (2
years). It was revealed that monthly infant mortality at Federal Medical Centre
Umuahia, have no seasonal influence. As such the study recommends that
Government and other health organization should pay more attention to the state
by mobilizing more resources tofight and reduce infant mortality
