A Time Series Analysis Of Birth Rate (A Case Study Of Federal Medical Cenetre Umuahia, Abia State)
ABSTRACT
The principal aim of this work is to fashion out a mathematical model that could be used to forecast dependable future levels of births in the state and also to evaluate the birth data to see if they are normally distributed and have a constant variance. The survey covers all the registered births at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia Abia State between January 1996 to December 2001. To attain stationarity, operations such as autocorrelation, partial autocorrelation and differencing were conducted. The results of the analysis showed, amongst others, that: On monthly average, the birth rate of Abia State within the period under consideration is 34 with a standard devi on of 11.73 Stationarity was attained by differencing transformation at lag. Consequent upon the results, I profer these recommendations. Health administrators and health organizations should pay more attention to the state by mobilizing more resources to enlighten people on dangers of over-population data should be collected from other general hospitals in the state to compare the results. Adequate birth control measures should be adopted to check over population.
