ABSTRACT

This study examined the whole blood, clotting time. adult guinea pigs where randomly divided into four groups and treated with different concentrations Of the Sacoglottis gabonensis stem bark extract which was prepared locally with 4% ethanol (for five days and also treated with different concentrations of the salicylic acid for 5 days. Results show that whole blood clotting time was 12.00±6.45, 13.33±6.24, 14.70±6.24 in group II, III and IV respectively, which received 50mg/kg, 75mg/kg and 250mg/kg body of extract respectively, while the control(group I) had 6.33±2.85 whole blood clotting time. In salicylic acid, whole blood clotting time was 5.33±1.42, 6.67±1.42 and 6.33±1.42 in group II, III and IV respectively which received 3mg/kg, 3.45 mg/kg, 3.60mg/kg while the control (group I) had 6.33±2.85 whole blood clotting time. The decrease in whole blood clotting time in all salicylic acid was statistically insignificant (P>0.05). Whole blood clotting time increases significantly (P<0.05) in all Sacoglottis gabonensis stem bark extract administration group II, III, IV respectively when compared with control group 1(6.33 ± 2.85). Our findings suggest that the Sacoglottis gabonensis stem bark extract has highest anticoagulant effects in guinea pigs. Keywords: Sacoglottis gabonensis stem bark extract, Salicylic acid, Anticoagulant, whole blood clotting time, palm wine.
