Time Series Analysis Of Neonatal And Perinatal Mortality In Abia State (A Case Study Of Federal Medical Centre Umuahia, For The Period 2006-2012)

ABSTRACT

The aim of studying mortality is to enable inferences to be drawn about the likelihood of death occurring within a specific population during a specific period of time. When one talks about neo-natal and pen-natal mortality, one talks about death of infants less than 28 days and still births plus death of infacts under 7 days of age. The main objective of this study is to find the trend and the differences in the level of Neo-natal and Pen-natal mortality among births that occurred at Federal Medical Centre Umuahia, Abia State. In this project research a review of related literature was carried out and it was found that mostly malnutrition, maternal diet, during pregnancy, non use of anti-natal care were reported as direct causes of Neo-natal and Pen-natal mortality. Social economic factor such as income, maternal education, health care accessibility and urbanization were reported as direct causes of Neo-natal and Pen-natal mortality. In this study the trend and seasonal component were estimated. The Box and Jenkins iterative method of time series (ACF) and Partial Auto Correlation Function (PACF) were used to test whether pen-natal and neo-natal mortality data fit into normal distribution and it was found that the data were normally distributed.
