The Role of Halide Ions and Inhibitive Peformance of Irvingia Gabonesis for Aluminuim Corrosion in HCl Solution:- Agunanne, Akuchinyere S.

ABSTRACT

The methanolic leaf extract of Irvingia gabonensis were tested for corrosion inhibitory performance towards aluminium in different concentration of 0.0 IM, 0.05M, 0.1 M HCI and NaCl. Corrosion inhibition of the aluminium was achieved by Irvingia gabonensis in the acid and salt solutions. The anti-corrosion efficiency of the plant extract was studied by means of weight loss method. It was observed from the experiment that in the absence of the plant extracts, the weight loss increases rapidly indicating an increase in corrosion. Conversely, when the plant extract were introduced, there were remarkable slow increase in weight loss. A more decrease in weight loss was observed when aqueous NaCl solution was introduced which also indicates a total reduction in corrosion. It was discovered that Irvingia gabonensis decreases its inhibitory efficiency with respect to time of exposure.
