ABSTRACT

The potentially medicinal and nutritional value of the leaves and stems of cissus quadramgular -Linn were investigated. Chemical analysis showed that the leaves and stems contain crude protein (26.70 26.72%), crude fibre (4.92 — 5.0%) carbohydrate (18.17 — 18.86%) moisture (12.78 — 14.63%) and food energy (226.60 227.24g1ca1). Alkaloidal contents were (1.30 — 1.35%), tannin (0.29 0.31%), soponin (0.23 — 0.26%) phytate (0.18 — 0.21%), hiavonoid (0i4 — 0.16%) and cyaogenic glycoside (0.0087 — 0.0089%). The leaves and stems also constituted a rich source of mineral elements comprising sodium (1.228 — 1.229%), calcium (0.6 15 — 06 17%), magnesium (0.594 — 0.599%), potassium (0.774 — 0.795%), phosphorus (0.121 — 0.128%). zinc (0.275 — 0.282), iron (0.999 — 0.201%), copper (1.139 — 1.143%), chloride (i.25-l.296%), and manganese (0.258 — 0.311%). Thii could suggest that that cissus quadrangularis-linn may have medicinal and nutritive values.
