ABSTRACT

It is show in this study that Pleurotusfiorida, an edible mushroom, grows very well and readily produces abundant fruitbodies on supplemented rice straw as its substrate. Supplementing rice straw with a nitrogen source such as soya — been chaff is not necessary. On the contrary it depresses yield and promotes contamination by competing micro— organisms. The initial wet straw is neutral to slightly alkaline but at harvest period the pH drops to slightly acid level going to .the release of acidic metabolitcs into the fermented substrate.
