ABSTRACT XV The effect of methanol leaf extract of Piper guineese on some hormonal changes and selected biochemical parameters in wistar albino rats, a total of 20 male rats aged 12 weeks were used. The rats were divided into four groups of 5 rats each. Group 1 (standard control) received vital feed and water daily for 28 days. Group 2 was given low dose of methanol extract of Piper guineense (MEPG) lOOmg/kg body weight (B.w) dissolved in olive oil and subcutaneous injection daily for 28 days. Group 3 received medium dose of MEPG 300mg/kg (B.w) dissolved in olive oil and subcutaneous injection daily for 28 days. Rats in group 4 were given a high dose of MEPG 600mg/kg (B.w) dissolved in olive oil and subcutaneous injection daily for 28 days. Prostate specific antigen (PSA ng/ml), acid phosphatase (ACP p/1), testosterone (T ng/ml), luteinizing hormone (LH mlp/ml), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH mlp/ml), total protein (TP mmol/1), were assayed using standard procedure. Lipid profiles were assayed using standard principle and procedure. The (B.w) was analyzed by weight gain/loss over the experimental period and were calculated for each group using SPSS 21.0 software. The organ weights were analyzed by the ratio ofthe weight and final weight of each rat and mean taken from each group. PSA shows significant (p<0.05) increase in group II to IV (29.72+15.40ng/ml, 25.43±13.87ng/ml) when compared to control (10.156+6.13ng/ml), ACP shows significant (p<0.05) increase in group III (75.9±7.84p/l) when compared to control (44.18+4.64/p.1). Serum follicle stimulating hormone indicate a significant (p<0.05) increase in group IV to II (25.8+23.64mlp/ml, 21.47+4.13.94mlp/ml) when compared to control (7.82±4.72mpl/ml). Also the results indicate a dose dependent significant (p<0.05) increase in serum luteinizing hormone in group II (42.1±2.49ml/pml) when compared to control (12.153±.8mlp/ml). The dose dependent marked increase in Serum testosterone concentration significant (p<0.05) increase in group II (30.28+6.71 ng/ml) relative to control (19.88±6.22ng/ml) the Total protein indicate a significant (p<0.05) increase levels in test groups (6.901±.54mmol/l, 6.801±.58mmol/l, and 5.58±1.40mmol/l) relative to control (2.16 ±577mmol/l). Cholesterol and LDL shows significant (p>0.05) decrease in test groups. (1.24+114mmol/l, 2.28±.70mmol/l, and 1.28 ±204mmol/l) when compared to control (4.541±.65mmol/l) HDL shows significant (p<0.05) increase (2.88+1.17mmol/l, 3.12±.917mmol/l, and 3.24±1.38mmol/l) when compared to control (.720±486mmol/l).TAG shows a significant (p<0.05) increase in group IV (1.38±130mmol/l) relative to control (1.22±164mmol/I). The experimental animal body weight in week 1 shows significant (p<0.05) increase in group III (112.85+6.66g) relative to control (97.96+5.1g), week 2 indicate significant (p<0.05) increase in group IV (117.96+7.42g) when compared to control (109.14±.34g). Also in week 3 shows significant (p<0.05) increase in group III (128.65+2.11g when compared to control (121.54+2.09g), week 4 marked significant (p<0.05) increase in group III (142.36+4.1g) when compared to control (124.74+12.88g). The relative organ weight ofliver indicate significant (p<0.05) increase in group III (5.07+.998g) relative to control (4.88±562g), kidney shows significant (p>0.05) decrease in test groups (1.00. ±145g, .985±096g, and .791.±255g) relative to control (1.03±.175g), heart indicate no significant (p<0.05) difference in test groups (,442±078g, .459+.056g, and .461+.063g) when compared to control (.456+.128g). The intestine indicate significant (p<0.05) increase in group III (10.61+1.12g) when compared to control (8.87+5.20g), spleen marked significant (p<0.05) increase in group II (,468±.163g) relative to control (.419+.116g).The results are indicative that methanol extract of Piper guineense may be acting on prostate specific antigen, acid phosphatese, follicle'stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, testosterone and total protein. It also shows indication in cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, triacylglycerol and high density lipoprotein levels. It indicated on organ weight of intestine, liver, kidney and spleen and no effect on heart. These results suggest a protective effect of methanol extracts of Piper guineense against sex hormone in albino rats.
