ABSTRACT

The effect of oral administration of methanol extract of Annona muricata leaf on hematological parameters, body weight and relative organ weight was studied in Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) induced male albino rats. Phytochemical nd acute toxicity study was conducted on the leaf of Annona muricata using standard methods. Thirty rats were divided into five experimental groups of six rats each; group 1- normal control, group 2- disease control (BPH-group), group 3- standard drugs control (finasteride-group), group 4 . and 5 (200 and 400mg/kg ofAnnona muricata extract respectively/ The normal control was not induced with BPH but was given olive oil administered orally daily and subcutaneous injection of olive oil was administered daily for 28 days. The disease control group was induced dihydrotestosterone estradiol varelate daily for 28days. The standard control group was given finasteride 5mg/70kg administered orally daily. The 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg of methanol extract ofAnnona muricata leafwas given to dihydrotestosterone estradiol varelate induced rats orally daily. Results of the phytochemical studies showed high levels of flavonoids (5.6200±0.01mg/100g), followed by saponins(4.8350±0.02mg/100g)and reducing sugar (2.200±0.02 mg/lOOg). Terpene (1.350±0.007 mg/lOOg) has the lowest concentration. The result also showed that PSA, lieutnizing hormone, testosterone. DHT and estradiol decreased significantly (p<0.05) in groups treated with different doses of extract. There was a significant increase (p<0.05) in RBC of all experimental groups when compared with the control. This study reveals important phytochemical constituent which shows that Annona muricata may have beneficial effect in preventing or suppressing the development of BPH and useful in treatment and management.
