The Effect Of High Alcohol And Garcinia Kola Intake On Blood Cell Indices Of Guinea Pigs.

ABSTRACT
The biological activities of water extract from Garcinia kola and alcohol were investigated in five groups of guinea pigs at doses of 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 mg/kg body weight for five days were administered orally on a daily basis.. Whole blood samples were collected and analyzed for haematological 'parameters (Hb, PCV, RBC, ESR, WBC) and absolute values (MCHC, MCH, MCV). Results showed that ethanol increased RBC counts, Hb concentrations, PCV and ESR levels but significantly decreased WBC counts while the MCHC, MCH and MCV values increased. Also it was observed that aqueous extracts of Garcinia kola slightly decreased PCV levels, Hb e concentrations as well as the RBC counts. A reduction in the WBC counts was observed but ESR levels were elevated, MCV, and MCH values were reduced slightly. Results showed that the effect of the aqueous extract of Garcinia kola was as a result of the flavonoid content at high doses, but can be recommended: for med1c1na1use at moderate, consumption as well as alcohol.
