ABSTRACT
In developing countries like Nigeria, with its increasing population the level of animal protein intake by Nigerians has continued to decline over the years. Onyimonyi and Ene (2003) reported that the average consumption of animal protein in the country is 4.5g/head/day as against the minimum requirement of 35g/head/day recommended by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (1992).These are attributed to th high cost of animal products due to high cost of production arising iiom high cost of conventional feedstuffs (Akinmutimi et at 2006) and concentration of animal production on few specie (Ezea, 2004). The demand for protein of animal origin in developing countries like Nigeria has far outstripped the supplies Ani and Adiegwu (2005).
