The Effect Of Cassava Cyanide On The Antioxidant (Glutathione) And Some Clinically Important Enzymes Of Rats.

ABSTRACT

The effect of cassava cyanide on the antioxidant (glutathione) status and some clinically important enzymes were investigated chemically and enzymatica  in male albino wister rats fed for 28days with high cassava diet containing 54.6mg CN- (100%) DM and 10% protein supplement. Urinary and serum cyanide and thiocyanate analysis was carried out. The mean serum cyanide and thiocyanale levels where 6. '73mg/I and 2.92mg/I after 7 days and 1.96mg/I and 1.5 mg/I after 28 days respectively. The mean urinary cyanide and thiocyanate levels were 5.69 mg/I and 10.81mg/I after 28 days respectively. The mean blood glutathionc levels were 0.150, 0.373, 0.03, and 0.024 after 7, 14, 21 and 28 days respectively showing depletion in blood glutathione with increase in cassava cyanide intake. There was mean increase in plasma activity of aspartate amino transferees (AST) alanine amino transferees (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) by 91.25%, 100% and 137 % respectively above that of control. There was elevation in blood glucose iii the test animals while time level of protein and albumin remain within the normal range for both the test and control animals.
