The Effect Of Cassava Cyanide On The Antioxidant (Glutathione) And Some Clinically Important Enzymes Of Rat

ABSTRACT

The effect of cassava cyanide on the antioxidant (glutathione) status and sonic clinically important efl7vflleS were investigated chemically and enzymatically in wale albino whistle rats td for 30 days with high cassava diet containing 5.5 mg 1000- I) CN- and 3% and 10% protein supplement. Urinary cyanide and thiocyanate analysis was carried out in both treated and control animals. The mean urinary cyanide and thiocyanate levels were /1 75mg/I and 2.4 I mg/I atIer 30 days respectively. The mean glutathione levels were 5.4 1 1 .2 for rats on 3%proteinand 3.63+ 1 .09 for those on 10% protein and 7.4 4- 0.47 for control during the period of investigation showing depletion in blood glutathione with increase in cassava cyanide intake. Decreased concentration of both albumin and protein of blood were measured indicating reduced protein synthesis. The toxicological implication of there finding are discussed.
