ABSTRACT

A Survey was undertaken to determine the enteric pathogen in groundnut pepper enteric (Okwa-Ose) sold in Umuahia metropolis. Ten samples of Okwa-Ose from Ndoro, Ubakala, Olokoro, Ishi-gate and Nkwo-egwu markets were analysed. The predominant enteric bacteria, were E. Coil, Salmonella species and Shigella species. This study shows that street foods can be sources of enteropathogens. The presence of food borne pathogens and unacceptable limits of enteric bacteria in these food samples poses some potential risks to the consuming public. The need for improvement and maintenance of good hygiene practices by food handlers and vendors are emphasized.
