Seasonal Physicochemical Quality Of Aba River

ABSTARCT

The effects of seasons on the. physico. chemical parameters of interest in fish • production of Aba River in Abia State of Nigeria was investigated in order to determine the productivity of the· River throughout the year. The parameters that • e were studied are: temperature, turbidity,' conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pP Alkalinity, total so. lids, total . dissolved solids, total suspended solids, total hardness, nitrates and phosphates, and free carbondioxide. Samples of water were collected from three designated points along the river course twice each month and the mean ·results ·were computed: The values of the physical and chemical parameters analyzed showed that the temperature ranged from 26c= 29.7°c with mean value of 28.28C, turbidity. ranged from 5 NTU - l0NTU with mean value of 8NTU, PH ranged from 4.5-7.5 with mean value of 6.21, total dissolved value ranged from 14mg/l -65mg/l with the mean value of 29.07mg/l, conductivity value ranged from 28ohms -133ohms with mean value of .. 61.22ohms, total hardness ranged from 7.5 - ll0mg/1 with mean value of I } ~ 23.7mg/l dissolved oxygen ranged from 6.8 - 9mg/l with mean value of 7.89, free . ~ ~ . . . ~ carbondioxide value ranged f~om 4.4 -:-- 66 mg/I ·with· mean value of 31.82mg/l, 1 .. , • .
