ABSTRACT

Actinomycetes proyide many important bioactive substances that have commercial value. Thus, the aim of the research was to screen for antibiotic Actinomycetes from umuahia environment. Three different soil samples were collected from different sites within umuahia. The test organisms collected from National agency for food and drugs administration and control were Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Streptococcus pneumonia. Crowded plate method was used for the screening of the antibiotic products using starch casein agar. The results obtained showed that among the three isolates recovered, Streptomyces specieand Norcadia specie had potential for antibiotic production. However, Streptomyces specie exhibited the most promising potential and it produced antibiotics that was effective against Staphylococcus aureus (20mm), Escherichia coli (22mm), Candida albicans (19mm), and Streptococcus pneumonia (21mm). Thus, it revealed that the isolated actinomycetes strains had potential for antibiotic production.
