ABSTRACT

Human and animal infections caused by Salmonella species remains a significant public health problem worldwide. This study was conducted to isolate and identify Salmonella from poultry • farms in Umudike, Abia State during the period of July to September, 2018. A total of 45 samples (droppings, litters, water and feed) was taken from four (4) poultry farms located in tJmudlkc area and was Investigated for the presence of Salmonella. Isolation of Salmonella was carried out In dllThrentlal and selective media idler enrichment in Scicnitc-1'-hroth and Incubated aerobically at 37°C for 24hrs. After incubation, colonies were identified by cultural characteristics, Gram staining techniques and biochemical reactions like Indole test, Hydrogen Suiphide Production (I-I2S) test and Citrate Utilization test. A total of twenty-three isolates were obtained from the forty-five samples, droppings 7(30.43%), litters 4(17.39%), drinking water 8(34.78%!), and feed 4(17.39%)!. Number of samples without growth was 22(48.89%). From this work, the detection of Salmonella in poultry farms poses health hazard to humans and other birds.
