Re-Evaluation Of Human Exposure To Cassava Cyanogen In Enugu State, South-East, Nigeria.:- Obike Maxwell- Judith O

ABSTRACT xi Manihot esculenta serves as a source of Cyanide when consumed without proper and processing method. Ten Cassava products (Garri) was tested for their Cyanide levels. The samples was gotten from some rural markets in various Local Government Area in Enugu State. After the re-evaluation of the Cyanide contents of the Garri samples, using Colorimetric alkanine picrate method, there was a significant difference on the level ofthe total HCN content in the garri samples. Nkani East Local Government Area with a result of 23.52 ± 0.04 showed a higher constration of HCN compared to Ezeagu Local Government Area with a result of 12.40 ± 0.00, The detoxification process ofthe samples indicates a good reduction rate in excess of80% and can be effective in reducing Cyanide content to a tolerable level of< lOmg/kg
