ABSTRACT ix Qualitative and quantitative phytochemical screening of Justicia earned used in ethnomedicine was carried out to identify and quantify the bioactive compounds present in these highly medicinal plants. Different percentage of ethanol and water was used as extraction solvents to screen for the presence of alkaloid, flavonoid, phenol, saponin, tannin, glycoside and other bioactive compounds. The result for qualitative study indicated the presence of all the phytochemicals mentioned above after extraction with the varing percentage of extraction solvent. However, 100% water showed a high presence of tannin and absence of alkaloids and phenolic, 40% ethanol showed the absence of flavonoid and phenolic, 40% ethanol showed high presence of Alkaloids and absence of tannin and phenolic, 50% showed absence of tannin and phenolic, 30% ethanol showed absence alkaloid, 60% ethanol showed the absence of phenolic and 100% ethanol showed the absence of alkaloid. Quantitative study which was carried out at varing percentage of water and ethanol to screen the presence of total phenolic and flavonoid. 50% ethanol showed a high concentration of total phenolic compared to other percentage at a concentration of lOOpg/ml and did not show the presence of total phenolic in 40% ethanol at 50pg/ml and lOOpg/ml. However the result also showed a high presence of total flavonoid in 100% water followed by 50% ethanol at concentration of lOOpg/ml of plant extract and was highly absent in 40% ethanol at concentration lOOpg/ml and 50pg/ml. Therefore, ethanol is a good extraction solvent for the extraction of phyochemicals for better result. The different phytochemicals are shown to perform different biological activities in humans and animals. These compounds can be harnessed for industrial and pharmaceutical utilization.
