Psychological Security, Emotional Intelligence And Self Efficacy On Undergraduate In Imo State, Nigeria:- Chikezie, S. C

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine psychological security, emotional intelligence and self-efficacy on undergraduate life satisfaction in Imo State. The study adopted a correlational research design. Three research questions guided the study and three null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The population of the study consist of 18,423 (2017 - 2018) academic session undergraduates students of Imo State University Owerri. The sample size of 273 (178 males and 95 females) undergraduates students were used for the study. The researchers adopted simple random sampling technique in the selection of 6 faculties out of 11 faculties in the university and purposive sampling technique was used in the selection of 280 university undergraduates from the six (6) selected faculties in Imo State University. Four instruments were adopted and used for data collection which includes “Life Satisfaction Scale" developed by Diener, Emmons, Larsen, and Griffin (1985), “Psychological Security Scale” developed by Taormina and Sun (2015), “Emotional Intelligence Scale” developed by Afolabi (2013) and “Self-Efficacy Scale” developed by Schwarzer and Jerusalem (2005). Data collected was analysed using Pearson product moment correlation r statistic to answer the research questions while the null hypotheses were tested using simple regression analysis at 0.05 level of significance. The results indicated that there was a very high extent of correlation between psychological security, emotional intelligence, self-efficacy and undergraduates’ life satisfaction in Imo State University, it implies that being psychological secure is a determinant that an undergraduate will be satisfied with life, that undergraduates with higher emotional intelligence are more likely to be satisfied with life, that life satisfaction increases with self-efficacy. That there was a significant relationship between psychological security, emotional intelligence, selfefficacy and undergraduates' life satisfaction in Imo State University. Based on these findings, it was recommended that psycho-educational interventions that would increase undergraduates’ feelings of psychological security and enhance their emotional intelligence and self-efficacy should be organized.
