ABSTRACT

Afzelia africana is one of the local food plants grown in the eastern part of Nigeria. It is one or the traditional plant food studied by very few researchers and was found possessing great nutritional values and medical potentials. These potential included improved glyceamic control and lipid lowering in diabetic patients. ft is a deciduous tree and is known as counter wood tree it is called akparata amongst the lgbos, Ukpo, kawo' among the yorubas, idom (Hausa) . . and 'yiase' among the Tiv people of, Nigeria respectively. It is widely distributed and. consume by many African country including Senegal, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzama, Sierra lcone. Ghana and Nigeria (Keay el al, 2000),
