Protective Effect Of Annona Muricata Linn, Aqueous Leaf Extract On Sodium Ion And Potassium Ion Levels Of Male Wistar Rats Treated With Used Motor Engine Oil:- Nzuruike Maryann C

ABSTRACT vii Environmental degradation and pollution through anthropogenic activities is a perennial problem that challenges of the government efforts in Nigeria. Petroleum hydrocarbon pollution arising from indiscriminate and deliberate disposal of waste engine oil in the environment is also worrisome the aim ofthis study is to determine the protective effect ofAnnona muricata aqueous leaf extract on sodium ion and potassium ion levels of male Wistar rats treated with used motor engine oil (UMEO). The study was carried out on healthy, male, young adult, Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) weighing 80-160g. Group 1: (normal “control”), Group 2: (UMEO-treated “negative control”), Group 3: (A. muricata aqueous leaf extract-treated +UMEO), Group 4: (A. muricata aqueous leaf extract-treated), Group 5: (UMEO + A. muricata aqueous leaf extract-treated), Group 6: (UMEO + A. muricata aqueous leaf extract-treated), Group 7: (UMEO + Vitamin Ctreated “Positive Control”). The results above show a significant (p<0.05) increase in sodium level and potassium ion levels of rats treated with UMEO (4ML/KG) when compared with control group. While there was significant decrease (P>0.05) ofsodium and potassium ion levels of rats treated with (200mg/kg of A.M +UMEO, 200mg/kg A.M +UMEO, UMEO + 100 mg/kg A.m, UMEO + 200 mg/kg A.m and UMEO + 100 mg/kg Vit.C) in all groups treated respectively when compared with rats feed with UMEO only. Elence, the result indicates that there was significant reduction (p>0.05) in groups treated groups with extract, vitamin C in sodium and potassium concentration of rats when compared to group administered UMEO only. The results obtained indicate the therapeutic effect of annona muricata plants in human diseases.
