ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to investigate the phytochemical and antimicrobial activity of phyllanthus amarus (schum). The composition of the phytochemicals in terms of their quantity are alkaloid 0.57 ±0.06, flavonoids 0.45± 0.02, saponin 0.99±0.03, phenol 0.38 ± 0.002, HCN3.64 ± 0.03, phytate 2.25 ±0.56. similarly the antimicrobial activity of the water and ethanolic extract of phyllanthus amarus (schum) are respectively as E.coii 12.50± 0.50, S.aureus 9.67± 0.58, Pseudomonas 8.50± 0.50 and E.coil 16.33 ± 2.25 S. aureus 17.50± 2.18, Pseudomonas 15.83±0.76. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the water and ethanol extract of P. amarus are E.coil 100mg/ml, siella 50mg.ml, Pseudomonas 50mg/ml, S.aureus 20mg/ml. these values indicates the diameter where ethanol extract is more effective than that of water, p. amarus is a potent inhibitor of antibacterial activity at very minimum concentrations.
