ABSTRACT ix This study was conducted to estimate the phytochemical composition and ABTS radical scavenging activity ofAmaranthus hybridus leaves. Phytochemical composition was determined using standard protocol. The result revealed that Amaranthus hybridus contained some bioactive compounds such as Alkaloids (1.84g/100g), Flavonoids (0.06g/100g), Cyanides (0.47g/100g), Phenols (3.25g/100g) and Tannins (0.48g/100g). ABTS free radicals scavenging activity was tested to determine the antioxidant capacity in the extracts. The result shows that Amaranthus hybridus can reduce free radicals in the body when consumed. Therefore, exploitation of the potential of Amaranthus hybridus leaves especially in areas of traditional medicine and pharmaceutical industries is hereby recommended.
