ABSTRACT

In this project work the methanol extract from Kola accuminata and Garcinia kola was subjected to column chromatography, thin-layer chromatography and phytochemical analysis. The thinlayer chromatography profile from the column chromatography fractions revealed different phytochemicals using different solvent system. The mean concentration values of the phytochemicals in mg/lOOg for Kola accuminata were terpenoid 61.224 ± 0.000, saponin 8.54 ± 0.04, alkaloid 5.6 ± 0.01, phenol 3.126 ± 0.022, flavonoid 2.91 ± 0.035, hygrogen cyanide 0.672 ± 0.0045, tannin having the least value of 0.326 ± 0.003. While the mean concentration values of the phytochemicals in mg/lOOg for Garcinia kola were terpenoid 37.328 ± 0.607, alkaloid at 7.564 ± 0.139, saponin 6.35 ± 0.055, flavonoid 4.64 ± 0.01, hygrogen cyanide 0.817 ± 0.0025, phenol 0.2886 ± 0.00125, tannin having the least value of 0.2101 ± 0.00095. It could be concluded that the nuts {Kola accuminata and Garcinia kola) contain secondary metabolites justifying the medicinal status and possible potency ofthe plants.
