ABSTRACT

A study on the occurrence of Phytopathogenic fungi on Saccharum officinarium (sugarcane) in Umuahia was carried out through different microbial processes involving the isolation and characterization of Phytopathogenic fungi on Saccharum officinarum .The study started with the isolation of Phytopathogenic fungi from sugarcane stem. Samples were collected from four different sugarcane vendors and carried to the laboratory with a sterile polyethylene bag. And the diseased part of the sugarcane stems were sampled for examination using the Sabourad's dextrose agar (SDA).The occurrence of phytopathogenic fungi from the diseased parts of the sugarcane stems were identified using cultural, microscopic and morphological characteristics. Fungal isolates identified were Colletotricum falcatum, Fusarium sacchari, and Aspergillus sp. There was the prevalence of the Red rot disease of sugarcane caused by Colletotricumfalcatum with the percentage of 62.5%.
