Isolation And Antibiotic Sensitivity Profile Of Salmonella Typhi From Stool Of Practical Year Students In Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Umudike Farm Centre.

ABSTRACT

Fifty stool samples were collected from practical year students of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike at the Farm Centre to isolate and determine the antibiotic sensitivity profile of Salmonella typhi which is responsible for typhoid fever. The stool samples were subjected to laboratory analysis to isolate the organism and the antibiotic sensitivity profile of the isolates was determined using disc diffusion method. Out of the 50 samples collected, only 12 (24%) produced significant growth while the remaining 38 (76%) did not produce significant growth .Antibiotic sensitivity test was carried out and these 12 (100%) isolates were sensitive to Nitrofurantoin followed by Ofloxacin with 10 (83%) sensitive isolates, 5 (42%) isolates were sensitive to Gentamicin while 4 (33%) isolates were sensitive to Nalidixic acid, 3 (25%) isolates were sensitive to Augmenin, 2 (17%) isolates were sensitive to Amoxycillin while only 1 (8%) isolate was sensitive to Cotrimoxazole. The 12 isolates were resistance to tetracycline and as such did not produce any zone of inhibition followed by Cotrimoxazole with 11 (92%) resistant isolates.
