ABSTRACT vi Water (H2O) is a polar inorganic compound that at room temperature is a tasteless and odourless liquid, nearly colourless with a hint of blue. This simplest hydrogen chalcogenide is by far the most studied chemical compound and is described as the universal solvent for its ability to dissolve many substances. The objectives ofthis work was to interpret the potable water profile ofthe IBB Female Hostel. The methods of analysis for determination of physical, chemical, microbiological parameters were used. The preliminary insitu pH results showed that pH ofwater as 7.4 was within the acceptable range set by WHO while the exsitu pH of water was 3.96 which is totally acidic. The physical parameters revealed that turbidity and total dissolved solids of O.ONTU and 28mg/l respectively were within the WHO limit. Temperature and conductivity have no WHO limits. The chemical parameters showed that all the parameters had lower values compared to the WHO limits exceptsalinity, phosphate and calcium that have no WHO limits. Heavy metals such as Manganese and Iron were within the limits set by WHO except Lead which has no WHO limit because Lead is poisonous and is not accepted to be found in water. Total coliform bacteria, faecal coliform bacteria and total hetetrophic bacteria values are (0 mg/l,0mg/l and 4.0x1 Ocfu/ml). These values were within the limit value set by WHO. Thus, E.coli was absent in the potable water sample. The presence of E.coli in water sample is of great concern as it implies faecal contamination which may pose a health problem. The result indicates that the potable water ofIBB female hostel is save for drinking.
